Two Out of Five Use Credit Cards to Finance Christmas
Christmas is fast-approaching and everyone in the family will want the latest must have gadgets and toys. As well as the gifts there’s all the food, drink and entertainment to pay for, but recent research found that in order to pay for it all last year, two in five people in the UK used their credit cards.
Furthermore the survey, carried out by price comparison website ‘Savebuckets’, found that one in five is still paying for last year’s excesses only eight weeks before this festive season, and by Christmas day almost 17% will not have totally cleared last year’s debt. Reaching for the plastic is commonplace when it comes to paying for Christmas, as 41% of UK credit card holders admitted to using their cards to pay for gifts, food and drink, with only 29% of those using their cards in the build-up to the festive season, paying off the full balance in January.
However, the report’s authors think that last year’s average Christmas spending of £837 per person was a peak that will not be repeated this year. They point to higher housing and utility costs this year, and the fact that people will have much less cash to splash around; add that to the amount of people who are still paying off last year’s bills and the picture looks gloomy for retailers, as well as those still trying to clear last year’s bills. Those with balances still remaining on their cards will have spent most of the year searching for new credit card deals with zero-interest balance transfers to which they can transfer their Christmas burden, and make way for this festive season’s spending.
Marc Ames of Savebuckets said: “A large percentage of Brits are still struggling to pay off spending from last Christmas. With interest rate rises and the rising cost of living impacting on spending power, it is likely that most of us will be making cut-backs this Christmas.”
Indeed, experts that regularly compare credit cards spending levels to those on debit cards are expecting to see more spent using the latter this Christmas as the credit squeeze bites, and people become more cautious about their spending. The writing is on the wall; if you intend using your credit cards to pay for the festive season then make sure you clear it as soon as possible, as you don’t want to be paying for it in the run up to next Christmas.

Creating Christmas Cards
Christmas is one of the best times of the year. It is anticipated greatly and loved by all. Some people begin planning for the next year’s Christmas at the beginning of January. They think about the parties they will host, the people they will see, and the relatives and friends they will reconnect with. Those who love shopping hunt for the perfect gifts all throughout the year. There are many special traditions that people celebrate around Christmastime. One of the best traditions for many people is the exchange of Christmas cards.
Exchanging Christmas cards is an important part of many peoples’ holiday. Because gifts can be really expensive, most people choose to send many people in their life the simple gift of a card. And what a gift a Christmas card can be. A thoughtfully chosen card with a personalized note inside makes anyone feel special around the holidays. If there are way too many people on your gift list this year considering giving unique Christmas cards instead.
If you are looking for something different or a way to put even more personal touch into your cards, try making your own Christmas cards this year. This way you can choose the papers you like, the colors your friends and family enjoy most, and you can design a card uniquely for each family on your list. Another great benefit of making your own Christmas cards is including your children in the process. Allow them to roll up their sleeves and get creative. Grandparents, aunts and uncles, and family friends will love whatever creation they come up with. Making cards yourself will allow you to save money that we all know is valuable around the expensive holiday season.
Exchanging Christmas cards can be a great way to keep in touch with friends all over the country and the world. As you have opportunities to travel and meet new friends, committing to exchange Christmas cards can be a great way to stay connected even after your travels end. It is a special thing to stay in relationship with people who all come together to celebrate Christmas each year. Rather than sending packages all around the world, you can save money, time and still be thoughtful by sending a card.
And perhaps the best thing about exchanging Christmas cards is just that: you exchange them. Not only to do you take the time and energy to prepare cards for family and friends, but you also can anticipate receiving cards from people near and far. Getting the mail each afternoon can quickly become the highlight of a families’ day during the holiday season. You feel loved and valued each time you open an envelope and get to discover the unique and beautiful card that is inside. You can experience the joy and care that your friends and family experienced as they created the perfect Christmas cards for you and yours.
As Christmastime rolls around this year, take time to cherish each important person in your life by creating unique Christmas cards for each of them.

Choosing Holiday And Christmas Cards For Family And Friends
âTis the season for Christmas cards. Well, not quite, but soon enough the time will be here to pick and send Christmas cards for your friends and family. Rather than looking on this as a chore, you should relish the opportunity to connect with far away friends and family and wish them well in the New Year. The only question now is âwhat card do I send?â A few words of advice should have you fa-la-la-la-ing in no time.
Religious
While the holidays and Christmas are a very religious time, there can be a big question about which religion. If youâre not sure what or how your friends are celebrating, stick to a non-religious greeting. This is a safe and festive way to send your wishes. Your family, on the other hand, should be no mystery. You already know how important religion is to your family, so pick a card that is thoughtful and appropriate. There is no rule when selecting a Christmas or holiday card to your family, but you should know what is best.
Funny
A good laugh can brighten everyoneâs holiday. While this may not be appropriate for everyone on your list, you can certainly select a funny holiday card for your friends who enjoy a good laugh. It is best to steer clear of any joke that is a little too racy. Luckily, they just donât make too many offensive Christmas cards so youâre safe there. As a litmus test for your holiday or Christmas joke card, think if your boss or your mom would laugh at it or be offended. If you think they would both laugh, then youâre all set. Most of all, know your audience. Itâs okay to pick different cards for different people. Better you send a nice holiday greeting than you send a distasteful card.
Picture
Many families go to great lengths to include a photograph of their children dressed up for the holiday or even the whole family â including the dog. A photo card is a great way to send your wishes. Your family will love to see your shining faces around the holidays, especially if youâre living far away from each other. A photo Christmas card might not be the best choice for your old college friend or a casual acquaintance. It certainly wouldnât be offensive, just make sure youâre in the picture so there is someone they recognize in the picture.
Notes and newsletters
A holiday note or letter is perfect for keeping your family and friends up-to-date. End the year on a cheerful note by highlighting your familyâs accomplishments and triumphs. Keep the note cheerful and newsy and youâll be all set. You might want to leave out any depressing news – like when the turtle died â just to keep with the holiday spirit. Again, make sure you know your audience. Some more casual or business acquaintances may not be as interested in your news as your family and close friends. For those on your list, skip the long note and include your hand written wishes. In some cases, less is more.
One thing is for sure, real paper Christmas cards are the only way to go. An e-mail Christmas greeting is just not the same. Donât get lazy and think you can send an email and be off the hook for Christmas cards. Sending a real Christmas card with your genuine holiday wishes is a long standing tradition that should be honored.
Christmas and holiday cards donât have to be a chore. Select your cards based on your audience, take the time to write a nice greeting and youâll be done in no time. Happy Holidays!!!

The Story Of How Christmas Cards Came To Be
It is not uncommon for popular inventions to be claimed by more than one person. So it is with Christmas cards. A young William Maw Egley engraved the first holiday card in 1842, at the age of 16. Proclaiming “A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you, ” this card depicts skaters, dancers and a Christmas dinner party, as well as gifts being given to the poor.
Why, if in 1842, William Egley created the first card, does credit usually go to Sir Henry Cole in 1843? The answer may never be known, but it probably has something to do with Cole’s position in society. In any case, Sir Henry Cole, who was the director of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, wanted John Callcott Horsley to draw up a card for Christmas. Horsley was a famous artist at that time and did create a card that was remarkably similar to Egley’s card that had been done the prior year.
Horsley’s card was a one-page card that showed three scenes. The first showed a family dinner party with the parents and young child sipping wine. The two other scenes were of the hungry being fed and the naked being clothed. Across the middle of the card was a banner with the message, “A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you.” Cole had 1000 of these cards printed up by Summerby’s Home Treasury Office. The cards were sold for one shilling each. Just 12 cards from this original batch are known to exist today.
Of course, there were those who felt that the card was a bad influence on the moral development of children. The critics said that the cards were too secular and fostered anti-social behaviors, such as intemperance and alcoholism.
For the most part, the public fell in love with this new idea. At first, cards were delivered directly to the recipient. It did not take long until the cards were being delivered by mail at the postal rate of one cent each. By the 1850s, Europeans across the continent were sending printed Christmas cards to each other.
The original cards featured scenes of springtime, flowers and gardens, children and animals. As time passed, cards became more and more intricately designed and ornate. Materials such as frosted glass, tassels, dried flowers, silk ribbons, pearls and fabric were all used to decorate the cards. One known card had more than 725 pieces of fabric sewn all together.
Even though the immigrant German lithographer, Louis Prang, began printing cards in America in 1874, the Americans were slow to adopt the ritual of sending cards at Christmas. The entire batch of cards printed in 1874 was exported to England. By 1875, Prang was selling holiday cards to Americans.
Mr. Prang was a serious craftsman and his cards showed excellent workmanship. Over time, the scenes on the card fronts changed to include winter activities, fir trees and homey, glowing fires. By 1881, his shop was printing more than 5,000,000 Christmas cards every year. Imitators sprang up and began to print low-quality, inexpensive cards, which eventually put Mr. Prang out of business.
Christmas cards are big money today. More than 4,000,000 holiday cards are sold every year, creating a multi-billion dollar industry. Although changes may come as people get more conscious of the impact all of these cards have on the Earth, the Yuletide card industry is not likely to go out of business anytime soon.

Choose Personalized Business Christmas Cards for your Partners and Clients
Sending Christmas cards is now a fairly old tradition, a tradition that everyone appreciates and enjoys. The joy of receiving Christmas cards, especially when they are from someone whom you least expected to send you a card, is a part of the Christmas magic. Not everyone may enjoy sending Christmas cards, but when it comes to getting them, all of us like that. Some people send Christmas cards out of sheer pleasure or love for other people. Others send them because they feel the need to further their relationships with other people. No matter what category you are part of, you should keep in mind that Christmas cards are a nice gesture that everyone should take the time to do, especially since it’s only once a year.
When it comes to making a business relationship stronger, sending business Christmas cards is an important step in that direction. As true as it may be that some people take them for granted, you should also keep in mind that, although they might not think too much of it, they are very likely to be offended if you fail to send them some business Christmas cards. Or, on the other hand, your business partners or employees may not even expect this gesture from you, which means they will certainly be delighted, or at least taken by surprise. The bottom line is that Christmas means different things to different people, and their interpretation of receiving business Christmas cards depends a lot on how they feel about sending and receiving cards in general. But I don’t think there’s anyone out there who does not appreciate it when others think of him/her.
Now that you know you must send business Christmas cards, there are some important aspects that you must not overlook. For instance, as you certainly know, any present that you make or card that you send reflects on you as the sender. Therefore, if the business Christmas cards you send are cheap, that’s the way you will seem too, cheap. On the other hand, if you choose carefully and opt for high quality cards designed by professionals, you will certainly make a good impression, which will then reflect positively on your image in the eyes of your business partners. Moreover, sending nothing but tasteful business Christmas cards is a must, because a business relationship should not be tested with Christmas cards. This is not certainly the occasion to test whether your business partners or clients have a sense of humor. There are many beautiful business Christmas cards with traditional themes that you can send.
You can order business Christmas cards online, and have them personalized by imprinting them, which is also possible online. If your personalization does not exceed four lines, it will also be free, and you can even opt for personalized envelopes. All business Christmas cards will be shipped to you in no more than three business days, and if you decide to order early, you may even benefit from a substantial discount.

How to compose a ‘Thank you’ note to clients for sending beautiful Christmas cards?
I don’t want to say the basic ‘Thank you’, but rather compose a letter wishing them a prosperous New Year, etc. Can anyone offer some kind words? I can’t seem to compose anything good.
Happy New Year all!
