Christmas Shopping Online: What Are The Best Products to Buy Online?

You can buy almost anything online these days.  But should you?  In this article, we will take a look at online Christmas shopping and the items that you should absolutely buy online and those gifts that you should first review in a store.

Let me tell you a little story about a barbeque pit.

I was visiting with my parents this summer and I noticed that my dad was out of the house for about three hours for three consecutive days.  I asked him where he had been and he said, “I’m out looking for a new barbeque pit.  Our old one is not functioning very well anymore.”

I then asked, “Have you tried searching online?”

He looked at me rather funny, as if I was a tad crazy.  My father is someone who is fairly new to computers.  He still takes quite a long time to compose an email, but he did purchase a computer online and he checks his stock portfolio online everyday.  But, other than that, he is still somewhat a stranger to the online world.

He questioned me, incredulously, “I can buy a barbeque pit online?”

It turns out that many people are in my father’s situation, unaware that virtually every item is sold online.  From clothes to faucets to technology, you can find everything including a barbeque pit.  In fact, we bought the barbeque pit online and my father saved $500.

But does everything lend itself to being purchased online?

There are some items that you should definitely buy online.  Technology, music, and books should nearly always be purchased online.  The best LCD televisions, iPods, and digital cameras are all sold for less online.  On stores like Amazon, these items have tens if not hundreds of independent reviews that provide much more information that any store representative could provide.  Similarly, music is always less expensive online and can be downloaded to your iPod in seconds.  The same applies to books if you have the Amazon Kindle.

For many people, this is where their online purchasing ends.  But there is a whole world of goods that await you online and the prices are nearly always better.  For example, at a watch store online, my friend recently saved over $900 on a Tag Heuer watch, which was a savings of over 100%.  Fragrances, perfumes, and body products are all available online at terrific prices.

How, though, do you get a sense of the product if you have not touched it and seen it up close?  This is where you combine store and online shopping:  Take a look at the product in the store, compare the prices online, and then you will always find the best price.  (I always ask the store if they can beat the online price since I experienced the product in their store.)

The bottom line is this:  If you want to do get the same items at better prices, you should always do your Christmas Shopping online!

Best Reasons to Skip Christmas This Year

It’s been ingrained in us by our families and the media from a young age that Christmas is supposed to be the best time of the year and that you must spend hundreds of dollars if you want it to be perfect. Well I say phooey! Christmas has become a disgusting display of our insatiable, excessively materialistic, piggish society. You don’t need to run out and find the newest “it” toy for your kids or a new set of bar stools for your wife. There are many, many ways to spend Christmas day this year that do not involve money or presents. You can still have a great time without celebrating.

1. Donate your time to charity. You hear of people doing this all the time, but have you every actually met someone who spends their Christmas volunteering? It’s like some myth that always floats around come Christmastime, but you can make it a reality this year. Instead of overindulging in alcohol and presents, see how other less fortunate people spend the day.
2. Take a vacation. Yes this sounds a little materialistic, but you don’t have to be ridiculously extravagant or anything. Just plan a simple getaway for you and your family. No presents are necessary and you will be able to skip all of the holiday madness that completely takes over just a few days beforehand.
3. Have a relax day. How often do you get a paid day off from work? It’s pretty rare, so why not take advantage of it and just relax and rest for the whole day. Christmas is always extremely stressful and you often go back to work the next day overly tired and worn out. Just stay at home, eat some good food, watch a movie or two and spend time with the ones you love most, or no one at all.
4. Clean your house. This sounds like a terrible way to spend Christmas, but if it could really use a good cleaning then why not spend your paid holiday doing it. Grab a mop, some gloves, disinfectant and have at it!
5. Drink too much. While this may be a time honored tradition in some families, most of us have to be responsible the majority of the time and rarely have the opportunity to overindulge. Spend the day with your honey and bottle or two or wine. Just relax and completely tune out all of the craziness that’s taken over your neighborhood.

You don’t have to spend Christmas like everyone else does this year. After years and years of distortion, it really has completely lost its original purpose and meaning.

Best of Narada Christmas

416WW2WH3GL. SL160 Best of Narada Christmas

Amazon.com
A superb two-disc set of Narada’s finest recording artists, from David Arkenstone and Eric Tingstad and Nancy Rumbel to Nando Lauria and Dordán. Narada has assembled a wide assortment of musical glad tidings that encompass New Age-like pop arrangements with larger ensembles, Celtic interpretations, jazzy and neoclassical pieces, and a host of acoustic readings, the least of which is Billy McLaughlin’s “What Child Is This?” Whether you like straight-ahead arrangements like Arkenstone’s playful and more produced “I Saw Three Ships,” or improvised pieces such as the enchanting rendition of “Carol of the Bells” by Kostia, The Best of Narada Christmas does a good job of pooling the finer works of its artists in one Whitman Sampler that packs value-plus–and enough seasonal atmosphere to turn your listening environment into a shaken snow globe. –Martin Keller

The Early Ski Bird Misses the Snow: Winter Sports Fans Change Booking Strategy to Get Best Conditions

During the winter of 2006/07, Europe suffered one of the worst snowfalls on record. As the busy Christmas and New Year season approached, ski resorts across the continent waited nervously for the snow to arrive. But the snow never came – at least not in the quantities normally expected.

Many skiers and snowboarders were faced with the grim prospect of skiing on thin strips of artificial snow, or were shipped to other resorts higher in altitude, along with everyone else, to compete for what little white stuff there was on the ground.

Global warming was made the scapegoat for the poor conditions, although it’s more likely that this was just a freak season, (global warming is generally regarded as a more gradual process) but there’s no denying that winter seasons in Europe and all over the world have been getting shorter and ski resorts are receiving less snow than in previous years.

However, rather than putting the punters off, the popularity of snow sports is growing year on year, probably due to the availability of cheap flights to many cities near ski resorts and the rise in the number of young people taking up skiing or snowboarding in one of the growing number of snow domes or dry slopes in the UK.

But along with the weather, the way people book their skiing holidays appears to be changing. Rather than book a ski package several months in advance and risk bad conditions, more people are keeping a close eye on the snow forecast and then booking a D.I.Y. trip at the last minute. Booking flights, accommodation and transfers separately may be a little more hassle than booking a package, but it can actually be cheaper and is also more flexible.

Another tactic is the advance booking of a flight to a city which has several ski resorts within easy reach, and then choosing the resort with the best snow conditions at the last minute. By booking early it is possible to get cheap flights to Zurich, Geneva, Lyon, Innsbruck or Toulouse for example, all of which have dozens of well known ski resorts within just a couple of hour’s drive from the airport.

As the world’s weather becomes ever more unpredictable and snowfalls become more unreliable, it’s likely that these methods of booking will become the norm, and we may see the decline of the traditional “early bird” package, except in the highest, most snow sure ski resorts.
