How do I know my dog’s clothing size?

My dog is a maltese puppy and weighs about 4-5lbs. How do I know exactly what size clothes will fit him? My family keeps asking his size because they want to buy him stuff for halloween and christmas. A lot of the clothes I see are labled xxs, xs, s, m, etc. How do I know if he fits an xx small, an xsmall, or just a small? He’s not very big, but has poofy fur that might require a bigger size shirt.

Well sizes vary for each store. You should check the store you are buying your costume for’s sizing chart. Here’s an idea…

If your dog weighs:

2-3 lbs., order size EXTRA TINY

4-7 lbs., order size TINY

8-15 lbs., order size TOY

16-25 lbs., order size SMALL

26-40 lbs., order size MEDIUM

41-75 lbs., order size LARGE

76-115 lbs., order size EXTRA LARGE

116-140 lbs., order size GIANT

141-200 lbs., order size EXTRA GIANT

well i think u shouldn’t dress animals up because they already have fur… they woud be really hot in them and my dog would try and chew it off. so i dont buy him clothes.

Dog clothing is like people clothing, sizes differ depending on the store. Usually it will have a measurement as well, I always look for that.

Most dog clothes will have a sizing charts, I know Petsmart has a sizing chart on their site, you can check it and search for a sizing chart, its something you can do at home too! I would say small, possible medium?!

Well what you need to do is measure your dog. You will need to measure the length of the dog. From the base of the neck to the base of the tail. Then you need to measure the dogs neck. Then you need to measure the dogs girth. This is the largest part of the dogs chest.

So the length, the neck, the girth. This will give you the measurements for your dog. I would not go over board on clothing as your dog is still growing. He will just grow out of what you get. A few items will be fine to start.

You can’t really go by the size on the label because the sizing is really inconsistent between various brands. My dog wears both a small and a medium–it just depends on where you purchase the clothing. Instead, use the measurements provided on the packaging or in the description of the item if you’re shopping online. That will give you better accuracy. Good luck!
