Do you ever think of giving your kids or grandkids, nieces, nephews and others, books for Christmas?

Instead of gameboys, xboxes and other crap they never learn anything from?
Iritadragon, I would hope it was the books, but in this day and age I wouldn’t hold my breath for that choice.

I always gave my son books for Christmas, I loved for him to use his imagination and they say readers are more intelligent. I think our society is losing the ability to enjoy a good book.

I always give my grandkids & niece & nephews books. Usually special books like pop-ups or books that have puzzles in the pages and for this Christmas I got them sing along books that have a keyboard imbedded in the books, so they can sing &play music along with the books.

But they can usually expect books, or art supplies from me.

My kids ask for books for Christmas. I love buying them books. I don’t buy my kids the video games, I try to find fun, yet educational toys, books, etc. My kids are not bored at all everything is fun, but they learn while playing. We love books at our house!

yes, books are some of the best kinds of gifts we can give to a child. only thing is, getting some kids to actually read them. i have 3 kids and i myself have always loved reading ever since i was a child, my 12 yr. old loves to read and my 6 yr. old loves to read, but my 9 yr. old can’t stand it, even if i read it to him, he asks the whole time, can we stop reading now, i usually tell him yes, i don’t want to force him to read if he hates it that much, if it was something he could grow into, it would have happened by now, i have tried since he was born. the only time i make him read is when it’s for school. but the other 2, yes, i plan on getting them books for christmas.

I give books for Christmas to my grandkids but unfortunately they probably never get read. They are 8,4,2 the 8 year old like them. When I try to read to them they are bored and get up to play almost immediately. It is foreign to them. Their parents (my stepchildren) never read to them.

I love to read and think it is very important. I always give my nephews (aged 2 and 4) books for Christmas. I may not be the aunt that gives cool gifts, but hopefully they will learn and maybe even enjoy reading. This year, we are also giving books to my husbands young cousins (aged 3 and 5). I would never consider Xboxes and gameboys because they will get that stuff from other people (and I really can’t afford it ).

from the time my grandkids were born I started giving them books. All the nursery rhymes, all the Hans Christian Anderson stories, all stories to read aloud to them and as they got older all the books geared for their ages, but as they got to tweens and teens they wanted other things also so I started giving them money and they would get money from other people and buy what they wanted. They all love to read and just as an aside, all my kids still love to receive books, all are always reading something, and all my daughters in law and I swap books that we are reading also, and 2 of them belong to monthly book clubs, read a book and discuss it. ! of my sons has at least 2 books going at the same time, depending which room he’s in at the time!

I always buy books as gifts for my grandchild. So far, I only
have one. She loves those books with lots of pictures.
She’s only two years old. I already have two books for her
this Christmas, and I give her books at other times too.

Last Christmas we gave our grandsons aged 6 and 8 a complete set of childrens encyclopaedias and they have used them a lot this year for homework projects etc. We like to give them books for Christmas and their birthdays coz if we didn’t we doubt they’d get them from any other source lol. Although our daughter loved to read as a child she has never bought them books apart from when they were toddlers and couldn’t read them, there must have been some logic in there somewhere although it was completely lost to us lol.
Our youngest, at 17yrs, still likes reading as long as its a good, gory horror! At least she’s still reading!
We try to steer clear of electronic toys for the grandsons and go for more in the line of what are classed as old-fashioned toys for them………and in general they play with them more than all the electronic stuff their mum gets them. But we fear the books only come out when we visit coz we read to them as well as them reading to us. Hopefully as they get older we can keep them interested.

Of course. My oldest daughter in WI gets select books by authors she favors. Not all but most of the grands get at least one book and some a set. I keep a small library of books for children from Dr. Suess to the I Can REad books up to chapter books. Even though we add new authors many of the grands books are the same ones I read and they still love them.

I always gave books as well as records, audio cassettes and or cds to my nephew and my god children. My nephew was more of a reader when he was younger but none of them seemed to mind recieving books from me. I made sure I found things they would be interested in with the books I bought them.

Of course! We all love books. Now that I have grandchildren, my kids and I are pulling together all the old favorites so the little ones can grow up with books all around them. My children like to get complete sets of some favorite authors or DIY books that are complicated enough to make it necessary to own the book.

Maisie. Happy Christmas Everyone

My little granddaughter is already showing a preference to books, at a recent visit to Santa he offered her a choice of a cute little doll or a book, she chose the book, she loves them, and believe me or not she has already got quite a few, and she is only 2yrs old, there is not a Birthday or Christmas goes by that all the children in the family doesn’t get a book, you can’t beat encouraging children to read

All four of my grandchildren are avid readers. I have given them books over the years. My youngest (will be 11 on Jan.1st) is such a Star Wars fan that I think he has memorized a huge book he has about it. Of course all of them are Harry Potter fans.

Mine always get a book in addition to other presents. When gchildren were little I would take them to big book stores and let them choose their own books. All grew up to be readers. It does work.

I give my grandchildren books for Christmas! I read the books to them if they are too young to read. Our oldest grandson is getting “The Most Dangerous Book for Boys.” I’m sure he will enjoy reading it and making some of the things mentioned. They all love it when I read to them. You have to pass on the love of reading. It’s something you share.
