The Gift in Christmas
Gift giving has been a widely practiced tradition of the Yuletide Seasons. Though the main reason why we celebrate Christmas is because of honoring the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, modern customs of the holiday now includes gift-giving, church celebrations, and the display of various decorations including the Christmas tree, lights, mistletoe, nativity scenes and holly.
So why did gift giving became so popular in Christmas? There is a poem titled A Visit from Saint Nicholas, in which popularized the tradition of exchanging gifts and seasonal Christmas shopping began to assume economic importance. Saint Nicholas is the common name for Nicholas of Myra, a saint and Bishop of Myra. He had a reputation for secret gift-giving, such as putting coins in the shoes of those who left them out for him, and thus became the model for Santa Claus.
Originating from Western culture, where the holiday is characterized by the exchange of gifts among friends and family members, some of the gifts are attributed to a character called Santa Claus
Santa Claus, also known as Saint Nicholas, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle, or simply “Santa”, is the legendary and mythical figure who, in many Western cultures, brings gifts to good children on Christmas Eve, December 24 or on his Feast Day, December 6 (Saint Nicholas Day). Modern Santa Claus is popularly known as the one that makes a list of children throughout the world, categorizing them according to their behavior. He then delivers presents, including toys, candy, and other presents to all of the good boys and girls in the world, and sometimes coal or sticks to the naughty children.
Pre-modern representations of the gift-giver from church history and folklore merged with the British character Father Christmas to create the character known to Britons and Americans as Santa Claus.
In other countries, the figure of Saint Nicholas was also blended with local folklore. As an example of the still surviving pagan imagery, in Nordic countries the original bringer of gifts at Christmas time was the Yule Goat, a somewhat startling figure with horns.
